The game of basketball

The 1st televised college games were in 1940. Pittsburgh defeated Fordham, 57-to-37, and New York University beat Georgetown, 50-to-27, at Madison Square Garden.

In the history of basketball, the highest-rated college basketball game seen on United States television was the 1979 National Collegiate Athletic Association tournament championship game - Michigan State vs. Indiana State final that starred Magic Johnson and Larry Bird. This was 1 of the best-rated basketball tournaments in the games history.

While basketball was creating excitement in Springfield, Mass., another YMCA instructor, William Morgan, thought the game was "too strenuous for sedate businessmen." He took parts of basketball, tennis and handball into a new game he called "Mintonette" now known as volleyball.

Walking out of the locker room, the music was pumping, the stands were now filled. The sweet, soothing feeling of walking into an empty gymnasium had now vanished and the amazing, intense feeling of a big moment had finally set it.

Easier - Basketball is a game where players try to throw a round inflated ball through a raised basket like goal. It is played on a court by two teams of five players. Points are made by shooting the ball through a high metal hoop and net at the opponent's end of the court. The large round ball used in this game is also called a basketball.

Harder - One of the most popular sports around the world, basketball is a fast-paced competition played by men and women of all ages and ability. The basketball court on the playground or in a gymnasium is rectangular with regulation rims located 10 feet above the ground. In the early days, basketball was played with a soccer ball. Today's standard basketballs are orange to brown in color with an outer cover of leather or nylon and a pebbled (indented) surface for grip and control. In men's play, a regulation basketball is 29.5 to 30 in (74.9 to 76.2 cm) in circumference and 20 to 22 oz (567 to 624 g) in weight. Women's version can be slightly smaller and lighter in weight.

The game involves two five-player teams that play both offense and defense. With a few exceptions, basketball games whether they are played informally or in organized leagues follow generally consistent rules that have changed little since the game's invention in 1891. Games begin with a jump ball at center court; a referee throws the ball up while two opposing attempt to direct the ball to their teammates control. The basic offensive skills of basketball are passing, ball handling, shooting, and rebounding. Defensive skills include guarding opponents, blocking and positioning to defend the basket, using quickness to intercept or steal the ball, and rebounding missed shots.

First, the Washington women's basketball team lost its leading scorer to injury. Later, UW simply lost its shooting touch.

The Huskies lost Sunday's championship game in the annual Husky Classic to Clemson 85-67 in front of 2,197 at Edmundson Pavilion.

In Friday's 26-point win over Seattle University, Washington lost two interior players, 6-foot-3 starter Heidi McNeill and 6-3 reserve Mackenzie Argens, to injury.

Four minutes into Sunday's game, 6-2 starting center Laura McLellan (averaging a team-best 14.5 points per game) crumpled to the floor with an ankle injury that left her shrieking in pain.

"We talked about Friday's game being the battle of Seattle," said Washington coach Tia Jackson, who said on two occasions she had guards filling UW's post position. "This one was definitely the battle of wills."

Although McLellan returned momentarily late in the first half, the Huskies (2-3) played competitively without her against a similarly sized lineup from Clemson (5-2). Washington led 35-34 at halftime. None of the Tigers who logged time Sunday stand taller than 6-2; six are sub-6-footers, including 5-10 tournament MVP Lele Hardy (22 points, nine rebounds).

What ultimately undid the Huskies was a 17-2 run by Clemson that started near the midpoint of the second half with UW ahead 52-50.

During the next four minutes the Tigers sank eight of 10 shots, all inside the paint except for a three-pointer by Kirstyn Wright. Washington, meanwhile, missed six shots it attempted during that span while also committing two turnovers.

Michelle Augustavo, who sank three of nine three-point attempts, missed all five she tried in the second half. Freshman guard Kristi Kingma shot 2 for 11 from the field, sophomore point guard Sarah Morton went 0 for 8. The Huskies shot 30.8 percent (12 for 39) in the second half, when they were outscored 51-32.

Junior guard Sami Whitcomb led the Huskies with 18 points, but was 1 for 7 on three-pointers. (UW was 5 for 20 outside the arc.) She and Augustavo both had three-point attempts result in in-and-out rim-spinners.

"I think they made the baskets smaller this game than the last game," Jackson said. "We got good looks. I would take Michelle's shots all over again knowing she could nail them. I would take Morty's [Morton's] 12- to 15-footers all over again. She makes them every day in practice. Today just wasn't our day."

Augustavo, who canned five of seven three-point attempts against Seattle U., understands she has feast or famine stretches in her role as UW's chief deep threat.

advertising

"They felt great coming off and they just didn't go in," said Augustavo, who scored 42 points in a 2005 game against Clemson while playing for the University of San Diego before she transferred to UW. "Like Coach said, she would take them all over again. I've just got to keep shooting."

McLellan's left-ankle injury was described as a sprain. She is uncertain for Wednesday's game at Pepperdine.

Seattle U. falls in OT

Seattle University lost an 18-point lead in the second half to fall 89-77 in overtime to Kent State in the third-place game of the Husky Classic.

Breanna Salley led the Redhawks (1-3) with 17 points.

Seattle U. led 54-36 with 16:34 left in regulation, then Kent State started chipping away at the lead. Kent State finished the half by outscoring the Redhawks 10-4, the last two on a layup by Stephanie Gibson with 37 seconds remaining to send the game into overtime.

Kent State (4-1) sealed the victory with Chenel Harris' three-pointer with 1:19 remaining. Seattle U. missed all six of its field-goal attempts in the extra session.

Men's Basketball Game Notes vs. Hampden-Sydney
Peery nears in on 1,000 points against Tigers in ODAC-opener

Roanoke will host in-state rival Hampden-Sydney at the Bast Center on Wednesday evening in the Maroons ODAC-opener. The Maroons are 5-1 on the season and riding a four-game win streak.

About the Maroons
Roanoke comes into this game with a 5-1 mark heading into conference play. The men have avenged their only loss of the season to Muskingum in the championship of the 15th Annual V-Foundation Classic. They have made some significant strides last weekend en route to claiming the 23rd Annual CNU Invitational Championship. Down 14 late in the first half, the Maroons defeated the tournament host, 90-81 and defeated Wesley (DE) 87-81 after erasing a 26-point second-half deficit to win the Maroons second-straight tournament title.

Peery nearing 1,000 career points
Curtis Peery leads Roanoke this season with a 20-point per game average and has been on every All-Tournament team including an MVP honor during the last two tournaments. He was named ODAC Player of the Week for the second-straight week after scoring over 20-points in both games last weekend. He has 993 career points and is now only seven shy from becoming the 31st player in the 95-year history of the storied program to score over 1,000 points.

Felix back and in Full Effect
Sophomore sharpshooter Melvin Felix scored 28 points this weekend, including 17 against Wesley in the CNU Invitational Championship after returning to the lineup. The guard from Salem High School was recovering from an injury suffered during the second game of the season against Muskingum. He has scored in double-figures in all three games played this season.

Moir now Second All-Time with Career wins Among ODAC Coaches
Head Men’s Basketball Coach Page Moir recently passed ODAC Legend and former Bridgewater coach Bill Leatherman for second all-time in career wins. He now has 337 career wins and enters the ODAC-opener with 214 career ODAC wins which is also second all-time. In his 20th season at Roanoke, Moir is the conference’s longest tenured coach along with most career wins and conference wins.

Scouting the Tigers
Hampden-Sydney is currently 2-3 on the season. After dropping the first two games of the season to Voorhess and Maryville, they claimed wins over LaGrange and Shenandoah. Tournament-host NC Wesleyan defeated the Tigers, 84-82 on Sunday. Turner King leads the team in minutes played, scoring, steals, blocks and field goal percentage. The hometown kid from Roanoke Catholic also is atop the ODAC in scoring and three-pointers made.

A Storied Rivalry
Roanoke holds a 90-73 all-time series advantage against the Tigers since 1916. This will be the 164th meeting as both teams have traded each game over the last four seasons (6-4 HSC). Moir is 16-34 in his career against Hampden-Sydney. The two programs are the winningest in ODAC history with 10 ODAC Titles to their claim along with over 1,200 wins each.

Playing during the Week for the First Time this Season
Both teams will be playing on Wednesday for the first time this season while the Maroons will be playing during the week for the first and only time this semester. The Maroons have played in three weekend tournaments to tip-off the season, winning the last two. Roanoke is 2-0 at home this season and have won the last three games dating back to last season.

Gaeng enjoying Senior Season
Senior point guard Drew Gaeng has enjoyed his final year in a Maroon uniform. One of the team captains from Fredrick, MD has started the last four games with his first career start coming against Johnson & Wales in the first day of the V-Foundation Classic. He has since not disappointed Moir’s decision as he has a near 3:1 assist-to-turnover ration (14 assists; 5 TO). He has shot well from the field (41.2% FG/38.5% 3P) and has hit all six of his free-throws this season.

For as long as he can remember, Eric Musselman has lived and breathed the game of basketball.

As a kid he followed his dad – the late and great Bill Musselman – to practice after school and hit the road for away games during weekends. Before long, Eric hit the hardwood at the University of San Diego and eventually coached in the Continental Basketball Association and United State Basketball League where he rose to prominence.

Then came the NBA.

It was over before it got started.

"I want to coach again without a question. I'm looking forward to getting the right opportunity at the right time and getting back in this thing," Musselman told HOOPSWORLD.

"Coaching has been my whole life really."

Musselman's story is well known. At 23-years-old, he became the youngest coach in the CBA where he seized success. In nine minor league seasons, he posted a combined 319-125 record and prepared over two dozen players for the NBA between his time coaching the Rapid City Thrillers (CBA), Florida Sharks (USBL), and West Palm Beachdogs (CBA).

After a few years as an assistant coach in the NBA with three different teams, Musselman made his mark with the Golden State Warriors in 2002. He nearly won Coach of the Year honors by leading Gilbert Arenas, Antawn Jamison and Jason Richardson to a 38-44 record, the Warriors most wins since 1992. After two seasons at Golden State, the Sacramento Kings hired Musselman in 2006. It wasn't meant to be. Musselman was dismissed after the Kings finished 33-49. Unfortunately, an off-court incident has become synonymous with Musselman's tenure in Sacramento even more than the wins and losses. Four months into his job with the Kings he was cited with driving under the influence.

Days later and with his team and the organization standing directly behind him, Musselman issued a written public apology.

Everyone moved on. Each day, Musselman keeps moving on.

"It's been an adventure. But it's also been a great learning experience. I learned there is a lot more to life than the team you are coaching," Musselman explained.

"What I think happens with us coaches is we are so consumed with our team and whatever league we are coaching in, that we almost think the whole world revolves around that. What you find out is there are other people in the world. It's a passing interest for them. It's not an obsession for them. It's not a way of life for coaches that are in it day to day. Sometimes those of us that are in it get caught up in it thinking it's the only thing in the world.

"It's not even close to that."

Now two years after he left the NBA, the 44-year-old Musselman remains close to basketball by soaking it in and giving back to the game.

There's been scouting trips to the University of Kansas, Southern Mississippi and Western Illinois and visits to the Los Angeles Lakers back during training camp. He's also spoken to several college teams about preparing for the next level and what it takes to be a pro. Musselman plans to attend more NBA games this season and admittedly watches "two to three games a night."

"Even when I go out to eat at a restaurant, it has to have a game on or have the ability to get a game or else I don't even bother going during the basketball season."

And then there is his blog - which derived out of motivational coaching emails – that currently features "notes, observations, and commentary on basketball and coaching" and has become a daily focus for Musselman, as well as a must read for everyone from hoops heads to corporate executives.

"I put a ton of time into it. I'm learning everyday."

But instead of scouting, watching or writing about basketball, Musselman was made to coach. It's what he does best. And it's only a matter of time before he is back roaming the sidelines once again and drawing up "X's and O's". Is that back in the league? Or will the college game come calling first?

For Musselman, it simply depends on what he calls the "perfect fit."

"I think the perfect fit for me is the perfect fit for whoever is hiring me. What I mean by that is, I think it is important that people that you work for – the vision and the plan going forward – that everyone is on the same page and that the expectations are the same."

While Musselman is anxious to get back to work, he holds close to him the memories of his dad Bill - a defensive mastermind who coached wherever there was a hoop and ball – passed away in 2000 while serving as an assistant coach with the Portland Trail Blazers.

"If somebody loved the game, my dad would spend time and invest time with that guy. To me, that might be the neatest thing of all," said Musselman fondly.

Now Eric lives to teach the game that's taught him so much.

OCATELLO, Idaho -- Hard-luck Idaho State needed something close to perfection to have any chance against visiting Brigham Young.
The Bengals did give the effort. A swift, second-half tussle between BYU's Jonathan Tavernari and ISU's Donnie Carson proved that, as both benches cleared, sparking a wild second half.
However, the more physical and athletic Cougars (6-0) just had too much of everything else, pushing out to an 18-point first half lead and eventually leaving Holt Arena winners, 85-65.
"It reminded me of a tough league game," BYU coach Dave Rose said. "It was an emotional game. You have to play with a lot of passion, but you have to control your emotions."
Brigham Young controlled its emotions and eventually, following a slow start, the game. ISU opened a 12-6 lead, but BYU answered with scoring runs of 11 and 14 in the first half.
"I thought we played harder than we had all year," ISU coach Joe O'Brien said. "We made too many mistakes."
O'Brien lauded BYU's intensity on both ends of the floor.
The highlight was BYU guard Jimmer Fredette's twisting, underhanded arching shot while facing away from the hoop that floated through the net late in the second half. The basket had ISU fans gasping and the Cougar bench leaping, fists high.
"We have

had a tough time with tough games on the road," said BYU's Lee Cummard, one of four Cougars in double figures with 17 points. "It had the good feel of a conference road game."
Fredette tied his career high of 19 points and six assists. A week after going 0-for-11 from the field, Jonathan Tavernari scored a game-high 23 points.
Idaho State (1-4), losers of three consecutive overtime games, had hoped take advantage of energy provided by the extra large attendance attracted by BYU. The 4,374 fans doubled the normal average gate, with about 20 percent with Cougar blue.
It didn't matter. The Cougars did what was needed to stay undefeated on the road - forcing more turnovers and winning the rebound battle. BYU grabbed 14 offensive rebounds and scored 20 points off of turnovers.
Idaho State also shot miserably from the foul line, wasting valuable points which prevented the Bengals from making a serious run.
Add into the equation Bengals leading scorer Amorrow Morgan's inability to escape Jackson Emery's suffocating defense and truly ISU had a near impossible task.
Morgan, averaging more than 22 points, had just two at the half and finished with seven.
"I knew I had a great assignment," Emery said. "I had four other players help me. We were trying to discourage him."
It worked, as Morgan began to take his frustrations out on his teammates.
Meanwhile, BYU effectively spread the floor, moved the ball quickly and found plenty of open looks.
"There was a stretch in the second half where everyone made the extra pass," Cummard said. "Everyone was sharing [the ball]."

The Thundering Herd (2-3) rebounded from its winless trip to Daytona Beach, Fla., with a thrilling four-point win against a spirited Old Dominion team from the Colonial Athletic Association. Marshall grabbed a six-point lead at intermission and held a 10-point edge, 45-35, with 15:37 left in the second half, but the Monarchs (1-3) quickly erased their deficit with a 10-0 run in under two minutes of game time.

The teams went blow-for-blow after ODU tied the game at 45 apiece with 13:03 remaining. Although Marshall never trailed in the second half, it could not fully separate from the Monarchs the remainder of the game in a classic, tight battle down the stretch. Down five points, ODU got a terrific reverse lay-in, plus a foul, from redshirt freshman guard Kent Bazemore to put the Monarchs down 55-53 following the converted free throw.

After struggling through a 0-for-4 first half, Herd guard/forward Markel Humphrey (Atlanta, Ga.) went 3-for-3 after halftime, including a jumper and 3-pointer in a two-and-a-half-minute span that answered ODU points. The first put MU up four points, 57-53, after Bazemore’s acrobatics and the 3-pointer followed a Frank Hassel putback to bump MU’s lead to five points, 63-58, with just 2:52 remaining.

In between Humphrey’s late field goals, ODU’s Kayon Carter and MU guard Shaquille Johnson (Jacksonville, Fla.) traded 3-pointers on back-to-back possessions just 17 seconds apart. The Johnson trey, one of two on the day for the freshman, came off a nice feed from inside from Herd forward Tyler Wilkerson (Lexington, Ky.).

Humphrey’s second-half surge (8 pts, 2 assists, block) seemed to spark Johnson, who continues to impress in late-game situations. The two-time Florida Class 5A Player of the Year played as few college rookies do, seemingly taking over the game in the last three minutes. Johnson collected two steals at critical moments in crunch time, including one with 35 seconds left and MU up just three points.

The change of possession forced ODU to foul several times to get into the bonus, where Humphrey sank the front end of a one-and-one opportunity at the free-throw line. ODU sophomore guard Darius James sank a jumper with 26 seconds left to pull the Monarchs to within two points, 64-62. MU’s Octavius Spann (College Park, Ga.) missed his front end free throw, giving ODU the opportunity to take the lead with a 3-pointer, which Ben Finney attempted but it came up short of the rim - his only miss from beyond the arc in the game (4-5 3-pt FG).

Johnson collected his lone rebound of the game on Finney’s misfire and was quickly fouled by James. Johnson nailed both of his free throws with 13 seconds left to put the Herd up 66-62. ODU center Gerald Lee answered with a layup with five seconds remaining, but two Tirrell Baines (Laurens, S.C.) free throws iced the game to give Marshall the decisive 68-64 decision.

“It’s great to win a game after the long Florida trip, which really helped our ball club tonight,” Marshall head coach Donnie Jones said. “I’m as proud of this win as any win that I’ve been apart of since I’ve been here, just because of the adversity this basketball team went through this past week, how they came back and practiced and how they came out and found a way against a really good basketball team in Old Dominion to get a victory.

“I don’t know if we win tonight if we didn’t go through what we did last weekend (in Daytona).”

Baines led Marshall in scoring with 15 points on 6-of-11 shooting and added a game-high nine rebounds, an assist and a block. Six of Baines nine boards were off the offensive glass, helping MU to a 12-4 advantage in offensive rebounds and a 12-3 edge in second-chance points. Herd sophomore center Marcus Goode (Chapin, S.C.) enjoyed his second straight productive game off the bench, scoring 11 points (5-7 FG) with eight rebounds, a block, a steal and an assist in 17 minutes.

Johnson netted 10 points to start his career with double-digit point outputs in his first five collegiate contests. Fellow freshman Damier Pitts (Charlotte, N.C.) joined senior Darryl Merthie (Sanford, Fla.) in the starting lineup and the Herd point guards combined for 14 assists to just two turnovers (7 assists, 1 turnover apiece). In all, the Herd dished out 23 helpers on the afternoon.

Lee, nephew of Marshall Hall of Fame basketball player Russell Lee (1969-72), scored 10 points for ODU with two rebounds, well below his season averages of 16.7 points and 6.0 rebounds per game. Early foul trouble limited the 6-foot-9 All-CAA center to just six first-half minutes.

Finney recorded a game-high 16 points with five rebounds and four assists off the bench for ODU and James netted 11 points (5-8 FG) with four boards.

Marshall sank 58.3 percent of its field goal attempts in the second half (14-for-24) while ODU was even more lethal from the floor at 68 percent (17-for-25) after halftime.

“After Daytona, we had to come back and grind hard in practice,” Johnson said. “We started correcting the things we didn’t do right in Daytona. We’re trying to not look back at that weekend and just going forward.”

The Herd will get a short rest before its next outing, Tuesday at home versus former Southern Conference rival East Tennessee State.

Over the last few weeks, the e-mail inbox has been stuffed to the point of overload. Josh Howard's anthem antics, followed by his apology on Monday, have brought a steady stream of opinions from the people.

Interestingly, more than 100 of you e-mailed me your thoughts about Howard after he disparaged the anthem.

But only a handful had anything to say after his apology.

Will training camp and a new coach cure Mavs' ills?
2:06 PM Tue, Sep 30, 2008 | Permalink | Yahoo! Buzz
Tim MacMahon E-mail News tips
The Mavs certainly didn't make any moves this summer that will bump them back into the West's top tier.

Gana Diop is a solid defensive center, but bringing him back to Dallas is hardly a big splash. Maybe Gerald Green finally turns potential into production, but it'd be silly to caught on a guy who was unemployed late last season to be spectacular.

But Rick Carlisle's Mavs have the bar set high. There's still a championship-or-bust tone coming from Mark Cuban's employees at the AAC.

"You know, everybody's writing us off," Dirk Nowitzki said, "but I think we're a lot closer than everybody thinks."

Well, it sure was hard to tell while the Hornets were handling the Mavs in five games. The roster from that first-round flop just got a couple minor tweaks, but Dirk is counting on a few weeks of bonding on the SMU campus to make a major difference.

"We've got a training camp with everybody together," Dirk said. "That's definitely something we missed last season - getting everybody on the same page with Jason [Kidd], him knowing all the plays by heart and the defensive calls. I don't think all the time we were on the same page. If you want to be one of the best, everybody has to pull on the same string."

Two-a-days? We don't need no stinkin' two-a-days

Eddie Sefko E-mail News tips
At least, not today the Mavericks don't.

Rick Carlisle has elected to go with one, extended practice on the opening day of camp rather than practicing in the morning and evening.

It's a move that makes sense for a veteran team. The Mavericks need to learn Calisle's defense and his running game. You can get more out of a three- or four-hour workout as players get warmed up and can go plenty hard knowing that they won't have to be back in the gym in a few hours for an evening practice.

By the way, San Antonio started camp by practicing for an hour and a half today. We're presuming that's because Gregg Popovich is an experienced coach who has been with the Spurs forever and not because he simply doesn't want to see what his team looks like without Manu Ginobili.

Mark Cuban: I made a mistake by backing off last season
8:46 AM Tue, Sep 30, 2008 | Permalink | Yahoo! Buzz
Tim MacMahon E-mail News tips

You might call it meddling. Mark Cuban calls it managing. And he thinks he made a major mistake by not doing enough of it last season.

"The struggles that we had, as much of that was my fault as anything else," Cuban said while holding court on the Mavs' practice court yesterday. "It was my choice at the beginning of the year to say, 'OK, Avery, we went to the Finals, you won 67 games. Rather than me being involved on a continual basis in management style decisions, take some rope and you take some more of the responsibility and I'll back off.' Responsibility is not the right word. But, 'You do what you want to do, and I'll back off.'"

Of course, Avery Johnson was a dictator by nature anyway. But, to hear Cuban tell it, he became an out-of-control control freak who tuned out his assistants and lost his team. Cuban said that about half the Mavs, at some point last season, asked to be traded or informed him they wouldn't return if Avery was back on the bench.

Josh Howard passes this PR test
4:58 PM Mon, Sep 29, 2008 | Permalink | Yahoo! Buzz
Tim MacMahon E-mail News tips
After acting like a fool for much of the last five months, Josh Howard finally offered a believable apology.

"I'd like to state that I truly and really am sorry for everything that's happened in the past five months with me," he said after stepping up to the podium at the Mavericks' media day. "This is not the way I carry myself. This is not how I want to be portrayed, and I really and truly am sorry to everybody that I offended. I'm upset with myself and the way I've acted the past months. I truly and really am sorry."

Howard made eye contact with reporters around the room while making his statement. Did the Mavs PR probably help him think of what he'd say? Sure, but it came across as heartfelt. There was no defensiveness in his voice. He gave decent answers to every question asked during the 10-minute session, making especially clear that he made a dumb joke about the Star-Spangled Banner but appreciates this country.

There is hope that Howard truly and really has learned from his chronic (no pun intended) foolishness since the spring and can move forward as a key member of the Mavs. He's motivated to prove that the real Josh Howard is the good guy folks around here thought he was before the spree of stupidity.

"That's not Josh Howard that y'all seen," he said. "That was an idiot."

Howard said he "sincerely hopes" he can win back the fans who have grown tired of his act. And he appreciates that Mark Cuban and the Mavericks organization have always backed him, even when it was far from the popular thing to do.

Dirk said he thinks Howard is a good guy who made some bad decisions. Cuban thinks the same thing, although he's taking a tough-love approach with J-Ho.

"I told him, 'If you [screw] up again, I'm going to kick your [rear]," Cuban said.

Beschreibung
